If you’ve spent any time on social media, you’ve seen posts and videos about life hacks. Life hacks are simple little things that can make everyday life easier or save you money. Things like using an empty sunscreen bottle to hide your wallet and keys while at the beach. Or they say putting raw onion in your socks while you sleep will help cure a cold. Simple little things to help make your life easier or better.
It doesn’t take long to recognize the dark spiral our world is in. We are surrounded by pain and suffering. Our streets are filled with hate and division. How do we find happiness in the middle of the darkness? How do we find hope in our hopeless world? I want to suggest to you three life hacks that will help you live a happy and healthy spiritual life.
First, think before you speak. James 1:19 says, “…everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” Unfortunately, it seems like everyone else does the opposite. We hear what we want to hear, say what we want to say, and let everyone know how upset we are. Can you imagine how different our world would be if we would simply just think before we speak? Reread the tweet or status update before you post it. Reread the email before you send it. Think about your words before you say them.
Second, live a quiet and peaceful life. Paul gave some great advice to the church in Thessalonica. He said, “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: you should mind your own business and work with your hands…” (1 Thess. 4:11). I was taught growing up that hard work keeps you out of trouble. It’s almost as if Paul is telling the New Testament church the same thing. Live a peaceful life, mind your own business, and work hard. It’s good advice, we should take it.
Third, live every day like Jesus is coming soon. Jesus reminds us three times at the end of Revelation 22, “Behold, I am coming quickly.” Sometimes, soon can’t come soon enough. The more time that goes by, the more excited I get about Heaven. Our world is broken, but Heaven is perfect. Jesus is coming back to take the righteous home. When Peter talks about the Day of the Lord in 2 Peter 3, he asks, “Since everything will be destroyed, what kind of people ought we to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives” (v. 11). Jesus is coming soon…live like it.
Life hacks are supposed to make our lives easier or save us money. I fully believe that by living these three principles, we will live happier and healthier lives, not just socially, but spiritually as well. These might not save us any money, but they will save our souls. Go ahead, give them a try and see what benefits they bring to your life.
